Despite having been born without a right hand, James Anthony Abbott (born September 19, 1967) was a former Major League Baseball pitcher who competed despite his disability. From 1989 to 1999, he was a member of the California Angels, the New York Yankees, the Chicago White Sox, and the Milwaukee Brewers, among other teams. He received his high school diploma from Flint Central High School and grew up in the East Village neighbourhood of Flint, Michigan. Abbott earned a gold medal in the demonstration event at the 1988 Summer Olympics while competing for the University of Michigan. He received the James E. Sullivan Award as the nation’s finest amateur athlete in 1987 while competing for the Wolverines.
He was selected in the first round of the 1988 Major League Baseball Draft and made his Major League debut the following season. A no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians in 1993 cemented his reputation as one of the best pitchers in the game. Abbott finished his career with an 87-108 record and a 4.25 earned run average. He was the most successful pitcher in the history of the sport. Currently, he is employed as a motivational speaker. Abbott also featured in the Boy Meets World episode “Class Preunion” as a supporting character.
